In the academic world Dover Publications is widely known for publishing standard texts in mathematics. To me they’re known for publishing books with the best cover designs around, which truly make them stand out among the boring rest.

Here is a new section I like to call Art History Done Badly
I’ll blog OPP (read Other people’s photos/paintings) and tell you, dear reader, 1) what I know about it from likely no more than the first view of the Wikipedia page, what I notice and interpret about it, and whether or not I like it. I’m usually easily pleased, so expect no scathing sarcasm. <,<
I’m doing it to hopefully do better in my Art History class. I’ll probably stop when I’m done taking the class.
Also, expect no great criticisms of technique here, most of these people have way more talent and skill than me. Kind of an exercise in non-judge-iness. And new words and grammars. That said:
Art History Done Badly #1 by Baked RiemannZeta
This is a painting that showed up on my Google artist-a-day gadget. I don’t know what it’s called, or anything else about it, but it was painted by Caitlin Karolczak. It looks like it is oil paint. I don’t know what it’s on.
The colors are fairly dark over all. I really like the sky, she shifts between the colors very smoothly. There isn’t much movement in the painting, but I think it’s because no one is moving. There is a young girl with what appears to be a puppet nun. The nun’s face is mouth that’s screaming. I find this disturbing. I don’t like it.
I’m pretty sure that it was intentional, because the flesh is painted with modelling and looks like it stands out from the picture plane. It contrasts with the flatness of the picture space. I don’t really know what else to say about it. The mountains are nice, if flat. I can’t tell what the middle to foreground is, but it’s a pretty blue. Overall, this is a far better painting than I could ever make, but I don’t like it. The doll’s face. I don’t like it. Well done, Mx. Karolczak.

how to ruin your life through fictional sex lives: Pardon me as I get all Art and Freedom and Politics on everyone
but this megaupload stuff is getting to me (like everyone else), feelings-wise, and I have a lot of political feelings on the subject and co-optation of politics and etc. And this isn’t really my area of political expertise so tell me if I’ve gotten any of my facts wrong, but let me just —

This is an evil spatula. A very evil spatula. Not quite the root of all that is evil, but if that root grew a potato, and someone picked it and washed it and peeled it and cut it julienne and fried it and served it with a hamburger, then this is the spatula they would use to flip that hamburger patty.
